Q&A…

I was asked a certain question twice this week so I figured there has to be more of you thinking the same thing…here’s how it went…

Q: I want to get lean, but I’m not going to weigh my food, count calories or carbs or do any other weird stuff. Give me one thing I can do every day, whether it’s dietary or exercise related that I could do to make some progress in losing fat. Keep in mind that I’m not doing a show, nor do I plan on being an Abercrombie model.

A, Jess says: Just one thing? Hmmm…. Maybe try “eat less?”

While I appreciate your minimalist approach, unfortunately getting lean involves more then just “one thing.” At the same time it doesnt have to be complex or brutal. It’s not rocket science, but it does involve a bit of forethought and preparation. Some simple suggestions include:

• Start eating 5-6 small meals a day, each consisting of protein and either a moderate amount of carbs or fat. If you are eating less than 60g protein a day (I am being generous here – you might as well go crawl up and hibernate like a bear because that is what your fat cells will be doing).

• Keep most of your carbs in meal number 1, and then the meals before and after your workouts. On off-days from training, nix the training carbs (of course). No, you do NOT always need 2+ slices of bread at dinner!

• Start doing some cardiovascular work — at least FIVE 30-minute sessions per week to START (note the key words here please). Its not only good for your body but you will FEEL wonderful too!

• Be consistent. You didn’t get fat overnight and you can’t expect good results if you only do the right things a few days a week. Make clean eating choices and regular exercise sessions a new habit for you and stick with it — it’s going to take more than just a few weeks to see the new lean you! But think about how great you will feel, and look, after that fat starts melting off you….

That’s probably a bit more complex than you want, but it’s just the reality of the situation. If being lean, healthy and looking good was easy, I would not be posting this article on trainwithjess.com!

25 Reasons Why You Don’t Want to Carry the Extra Weight…

Taken from, “25 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Your Body and Health”

Number 6….

6. Obese people spend approximately $485 more on clothing, $828 on extra plane seats, and $36 more on gas each year than their thinner counterparts. Researchers say an overweight driver burns about 18 additional gallons of gas a year. Plus-sized clothing costs 10 percent to 15 percent more than smaller-sized clothes. When it comes to jet fuel, a recent issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine estimated that the extra weight of obese Americans caused airlines to spend $275 million to burn 350 million more gallons of fuel.

As if you really needed another reason to NOT pack on the pounds another year!
